Project 1190 Döbling
Wien, Austria
PROJECT:
Heating System Replacement from Gas to Renewable Energy
OWNER:
Sole Ownership
COMPLETION:
2026
PROJECT TYPE:
Residential Building
CHALLENGE:
To ensure the building's long-term value, a future-proof heating and hot water solution was required. The conversion had to be carried out without disrupting the building's use.
SOLUTION:
In addition to new deep boreholes, the Energy Cube, a quickly installable solution, was implemented in combination with decentralized apartment heat pumps. This system provides heating during the heating season and cooling during the cooling season. Hot water is also supplied by the new system.
PRODUCT:
4 deep boreholes, each 150 m deep, and 1 Energy Cube H1-Type 2 in conjunction with 9 apartment heat pumps (Novelan WSV 6.2K3M and iDM iPUMP N5)

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The building was heated with gas.
1.) The building owner commissioned Roots Energy GmbH to conduct a feasibility study for an energy-efficient building renovation. In light of the anticipated climate changes by 2050, replacing the heating system with renewable energy was necessary, as cooling would otherwise be impossible.
2.) Based on the detailed planning provided by Roots Energy GmbH, the building permit application and grant application were processed. The solution using energy cubes in combination with deep boreholes as a source for decentralized brine-to-water heat pumps proved to be the most cost-effective option. Project management was handled by Mr. Georg Kreminger, engineer.
3.) Following the detailed plans provided by Roots Energy GmbH, the heating system replacement was carried out by the contractors PORR Bau GmbH, Prasch GmbH, and Elektrotechnik Pötz GmbH. The energy cube was positioned in the front garden on a section of common land. The Roots Energy hydraulic module (Roots Hub) was installed in the basement. Each apartment has the option of connecting a decentralized heat pump to the system.
In addition to the economic advantages, the energy cubes produce no noise emissions and, with just one connection each for the flow and return pipes, could be connected to the energy system in a matter of minutes. During heating operation, the energy cubes extract energy from the outside air. During cooling operation, they release the excess energy back into the outside air. The energy cubes can also be used to regenerate the ground source heat pumps.
