Project Tittwiesenstrasse
Chur, Switzerland
PROJECT:
Heating system conversion from gas to renewable energy
OWNER:
Generali Insurance AG
COMPLETION:
2025
PROJECT TYPE:
Multi-family building
CHALLENGE:
To ensure the building's long-term value, a future-proof heating and cooling solution was required. The conversion had to be carried out without disrupting the building's use.
SOLUTION:
The Energy Cube, a quickly installed plug-and-heat solution, was implemented in combination with two brine-to-water heat pump modules. It provides heating during the heating season and cooling during the cooling season.
PRODUCT:
Energy Cube H2-Type 1 in combination with two 45 Wp 86.7 kW heat pump modules

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The building was heated with gas. Cooling the building in summer was not possible.
1.) The building owner commissioned the architectural firm Ritter Schumacher AG to conduct a feasibility study for building renovation. A dynamic building simulation by ZeroEdition GmbH determined that, to maintain the building's value—especially considering the expected climate changes by 2050—a heating system replacement with renewable energy was necessary.
2.) The specialist planner RBT Engineering GmbH prepared a comparative study based on the HSLU heating cost comparison calculator. The solution using an energy cube and brine-to-water heat pumps proved to be the most cost-effective option compared to district heating, geothermal drilling, air-to-water heat pumps, or wood-burning heating.
3.) The heating system replacement was carried out by the contractor Willi Gebäudetechnik AG according to the detailed design plans by Ritter Schumacher and RBT. The energy cube was positioned adjacent to the parking area, in combination with a new bicycle parking area, and blends harmoniously into the local landscape.
In addition to its economic advantages, the energy cube produces no noise emissions and, with a single connection each for the flow and return lines, could be connected to the energy system in just a few minutes. In heating mode, the energy cube extracts its energy from the outside air. In cooling mode, it releases the excess energy back into the outside air.
