Project Jaama
Vöru, Estonia
PROJECT:
Oil-fired boiler replacement with renewable energy
OWNER:
Immo Albisrieden AG
COMPLETION:
2025
PROJECT TYPE:
Commercial building
CHALLENGE:
To ensure the building's value is maintained, a future-proof heating solution was needed as an alternative to the existing oil-fired heating system. The conversion had to be carried out without disrupting operations.
SOLUTION:
The Energy Cubes, a quickly installed plug-and-heat solution, were implemented in combination with two brine-to-water heat pump modules. This system provides heating during the heating season. The existing wood-burning system continues to be used to utilize wood scraps during peak demand. The previous oil-fired heating system was replaced with renewable energy.
PRODUCT:
Two Energy Cubes H1-Type 1 in combination with two heat pump modules. 45 WP 86.7 kW

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The building was heated with an oil-fired boiler in combination with a wood-burning boiler. Cooling of the building in summer is not necessary.
1.) The building owner commissioned ZeroEdition GmbH to conduct a feasibility study for an energy-efficient renovation. A dynamic building simulation determined that, to maintain the building's value—especially considering the expected climate changes by 2050—a heating system upgrade from oil to renewable energy was necessary. This conversion supported the building owner's committed sustainability goals. Over the next 25 years, more than 1.1 million kg of CO2 equivalent will be saved.
2.) ZeroEdition GmbH conducted a comparative study based on the HSLU heating cost comparison calculator. The solution using energy cubes and brine-to-water heat pumps proved to be the most cost-effective option compared to district heating, geothermal drilling, and air-to-water heat pumps. Due to the climatic conditions at this location, the existing wood-burning system was retained as part of the system to provide additional heating energy during peak winter demand.
3.) Following the detailed design by Zero Edition, the heating system was replaced on-site. The Energy Cubes were positioned adjacent to the boiler room, combined with a redesign of the common areas, and blend harmoniously into the surrounding landscape.
In addition to its economic advantages, the Energy Cube produces no noise emissions and could be connected to the energy system in just a few minutes using a single connection for the flow and return pipes. During heating operation, the Energy Cube draws its energy from the outside air.
