Project 1130 Hietzing

Vienna, Austria

PROJECT:

Heating system replacement from gas to renewable energy

OWNER:

Condominium owners' association

COMPLETION:

2025

PROJECT TYPE:

Multi-unit building

CHALLENGE:

To ensure the building's long-term value, a future-proof heating and hot water solution was required. The conversion had to be carried out without disrupting the building's use.

SOLUTION:

In addition to new deep boreholes, the Energy Cubes provided a quickly installable solution in combination with decentralized apartment heat pumps. This system provides heating during the heating season and cooling during the cooling season. Hot water is also supplied by the new system.

PRODUCT:

7 deep boreholes, each 120 m deep, and 2 Energy Cubes H1-Type 5 in conjunction with 23 Novelan wsv 6.2k3m apartment heat pumps

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The two buildings were heated with gas.

1.) Roots Energy GmbH was commissioned by the building owner to conduct a feasibility study for an energy-efficient building renovation. A dynamic building simulation by ZeroEdition GmbH determined that, to maintain the building's value—especially considering the expected climate changes by 2050—a heating system upgrade to renewable energy was necessary.

2.) Roots Energy GmbH handled the building permit application and the grant application. The Energy Cubes solution, combined with deep boreholes as a source for decentralized brine-to-water heat pumps, proved to be the most cost-effective option.

3.) The heating system upgrade was carried out by S.I. Energiesysteme GmbH, in accordance with the detailed plans developed by Roots Energy GmbH and OBENAUF Immobilienentwicklungs GmbH. The Energy Cubes were positioned on the roof of the larger building. The Roots Energy hydraulic module (Roots Hub) was installed in the basement. Each apartment has the option of connecting a decentralized heat pump to the system.

In addition to the economic advantages, the energy cubes produce no noise emissions and, with just one connection each for the flow and return pipes, could be connected to the energy system in a matter of minutes. During heating operation, the energy cubes extract energy from the outside air. During cooling operation, they release the excess energy back into the outside air. The energy cubes can also be used to regenerate the ground source heat pumps.
